Defense lawyer wants venue change in Baker case

Associated Press

NEWTON, NC (AP) -- A defense lawyer for a woman accused in the death of her stepdaughter says he will push to move any trial out of Catawba County because of all the publicity the case has received.

Attorney Scott Reilly said Monday he will push for a venue change in the case of Elisa Baker, the woman accused of second-degree murder in the death of 10-year-old Zahra Baker.

The girl's dismembered remains were found in western North Carolina last year.

During a hearing Monday in Newton, Judge Eric Levinson postponed other hearings on murder and obstruction of justice charges until June 27. The judge said he must wait for Reilly's attorney to file the change of venue motion.

Elisa Baker has been jailed since the October weekend Zahra disappeared.
