FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) -- Authorities have charged a
Fayetteville mother with killing her 1-year-old child after
officials determined the infant died from bodily trauma.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's says 24-year-old Malissa Yates
was arrested Monday afternoon. She is being held without bond on
charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting
serious bodily injury.
Authorities say Yates assaulted her son last July, and the state
medical examiner determined that the child died of blunt force
trauma to the head, chest and abdomen.
Yates is scheduled to make a first court appearance Tuesday.
It's not clear whether she has an attorney.
