BCC narrows president search to six

SUPPLY, NC (BCC) -– The search for a new President of Brunswick Community College has entered its final stage with the selection of six highly-qualified finalists. All six finalists will spend a day at BCC’s main campus in Supply, including a Community Meet and Greet from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. and a Faculty and Staff Meet and Greet from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Board of Trustees will then select the final three. Once those names have been submitted to and approved by the State Board of Community Colleges, the Board will begin the negotiation process with its top choice.

Community members and BCC Faculty, Staff, and Students are encouraged to exercise their opportunity to participate in this very important part of the process.

The six finalists are (date of visit is listed next to candidate’s name):

Dr. Vernon L. Lawter Jr. (Wednesday, April 20)
Dr. Vernon L. Lawter Jr. has served as Citrus Campus Provost and Vice President of the College of Central Florida in Ocala, Florida since 2006. Prior to his current position he served as the Director of the Mooresville Center at Mitchell Community College in Statesville, North Carolina from 2005-2006. He served as the Director of New and Expanding Industry and Focused Industrial Training at Mitchell Community College from 2000-2004. Dr. Lawter received an Associates Degree in Pre-Liberal Arts from Gaston College. He earned a Bachelors Degree in English and a Masters Degree in English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He earned a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Barbara Tansey (Thursday, April 21)
Dr. Barbara Tansey has served as Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Fayetteville Technical Community College since 2008. Prior to her current position she served as Vice President of Student Learning at South Piedmont Community College from 2004-2007. She served as Dean of Business/Professional Services at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado from 2002-2004. Dr. Tansey served as Vice President of Academic Partnerships at ITCAP, Inc. in Tucson, Arizona from 2001-2002 and Dean and Executive Director of Business and Industry Training at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona from 1999-2001. Dr. Tansey received a Bachelors Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Education at Northwest Missouri State University. She earned a Ph.D. in Vocational-Technical Education at the University of Missouri.

Dr. Sharon K. Thompson (Tuesday, April 26)
Dr. Sharon K. Thompson has served as Vice President for Academic Services at Brunswick Community College since 2007. Prior to her current position she served as Assistant to the President for Institutional Effectiveness at the College from 2006-2007. She served as an Education Program Auditor for the North Carolina Community College System from 2000-2006. She served as an Educational Consultant III for the System from 1999-2000. Dr. Thompson received an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Alamance Community College in 1978. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Administration of Justice at Shaw University. She earned a Masters Degree in Adult/Community College Education at North Carolina State University. She earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Argosy University in Sarasota, Florida.

Dr. Brenda S. Kays (Wednesday, April 27)
Dr. Brenda S. Kays has served as Vice President of Student Learning and Success and Instruction at Guilford Technical Community College since 2008. Prior to her current position she served as Dean of Instructional Services at Vernon College in Wichita Falls, Texas from 1985-2008. She also has served as an adjunct instructor at Guilford Technical Community College since 2009. Dr. Kays received a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Sociology and a Masters Degree in Counseling at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. She earned a Doctorate in Applied Technology and Training and Development at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.

Dr. Susanne H. Adams (Thursday, April 28 )
Dr. Susanne H. Adams has served as Vice President of Student Services and Academic Support at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina since 2006. Prior to her current position she served as Vice President of Planning and Special Projects at Sandhills from 2004-2006. She served as Dean of Planning and Research at Sandhills from 2001-2004. She served as Director of Academic Support and Chair of Developmental Education at Sandhills from 1995-2001. Dr. Adams received a Bachelors Degree in English Education and a Masters Degree in Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. She earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

Dr. Rick L. Garrett (Friday, April 29)
Dr. Rick L. Garrett has served as Dean of the Avery Campus at Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine, North Carolina since 2010. Prior to his current position he served as the Vice President of Instructional Services at Mayland Community College from 1997-2010. He served as the Associate Vice President for Technical and General Education at Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, South Carolina from 1995-1997. Dr. Garrett received a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Counseling at Western Carolina University. He earned a Doctorate in Adult Education at North Carolina State University.
