RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- North Carolina House members are gathering in their old chamber to mark the day the state became the first to officially urge independence from Great Britain.
The North Carolina Provincial Congress voted exactly 235 years ago Tuesday to send delegates to the Second Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia to vote for independence. The date, April 12, 1776, is one of two dates commemorated on the North Carolina state flag.
The resolution was known as the "Halifax Resolves." Virginia quickly followed North Carolina's lead, and the Declaration of Independence was signed within three months.
House members will meet Tuesday in the 1840 Capitol building to mark the event, and an original document from 1776 was on displayed in the Capitol.
