Gov. Perdue declares state of emergency

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) -- Gov. Bev Perdue declared a state of emergency for North Carolina following storms that generated tornadoes across the state.

At least 10 deaths have been reported across North Carolina from the storms, including three confirmed dead in Bladen County. The National Weather Service received reports of more than 70 tornado sighting in at least 19 counties.

The declaration puts the state’s emergency management plan into action and provides access to resources needed to aid communities affected by the storms.

In a separate order, Gov. Perdue temporarily suspended the restrictions on work hours for utility workers in order to allow the work necessary to repair power lines. The same order temporarily waives the restriction on driving hours for truck drivers to allow for the transportation of supplies to affected communities and for the removal of debris.
