THE RANT: Perdue's spokespeople still don't agree on where Governor was Saturday during storm

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) -- A question is swirling in Raleigh about what Gov. Bev Perdue was doing Saturday while storms and tornadoes were ripping apart her state.

As of 8 p.m. Saturday, hours after tornadoes had ripped through Raleigh, Sanford and Bladen County, the Raleigh News & Observer's Political Blog "Under the Dome" reports that state Emergency Management Director Doug Hoell hadn't even spoken directly with the governor.

Chrissy Pearson, the governor's communications director, said Perdue was out of the state "attending a family obligation."

Later, spokesman Mark Johnson told the N&O that Perdue was in Lexington, KY, visiting with fellow Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, as well as four of her former roommates from the University of Kentucky. Johnson also told the N&O that the governor had attend the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, a thoroughbred horse race held Saturday.

But Pearson now says that's not true. We followed up today with her, wanting to know why the governor's communications staff seemed so unorganized Saturday when most of the state knew these deadly storms were headed our way at least two days in advance.

Pearson sent us the following email Monday morning:

"We all knew exactly where she was. We respect her privacy as a citizen who values her family and friends, and who very occasionally leaves the state to visit. She spent many years living in Kentucky and has ties there. She wasn't actually at the race; state business brought her home early and she of course wanted to be here to help the state recover from the storms. Don't believe everything you read in the N&O."

I'm not sure we believe everything coming from the governor's office either.

"guv pumpkin"s guilty

"guv pumpkin"s guilty looking blathering on mon. am makes more sense to me now. after i turned the vol off did she say let them eat mint juleps???

Hmmm

Maybe she was "hiking the Appalachian Trail"...;-)

Where is . .

the comment I made Sun about this not being important? Did you not print it because I wasn't very complimentary to Kevin W and the rant? I only spoke the truth.

Pure Politics

Do you really think Purdue could care less about the tornados and the citizens they hurt. The weather news on these storms was all over the TV, press and internet. She had to know they were coming and yet she decides to leave the state to go interact with another bunch of liberals. Purdue's interest is in her political career, she could care less about someone losing their home, losing family and friends. She has been rich all her life. She has no idea what it is to struggle, to deal with calamities when you already are stretched to the brink. Her own staff could not get their lies together so this caused confusion and lack of communication. But, what can you expect. Dealing with Politicians and their cronies is just a sad fact of life but this writer will never quit calling it like I see it.

The meat of the story

What is the meat of the story? That she was out of town? God forbid she be somewhere other than North Carolina for any reason. It must be because she is a Democrat. I hear the two main reasons for vacationing with old friends is socialism and heathenism. I also have to agree with the other comments about the political leanings of this station. Do you really care where she was or did you see a chance to fish for a story and hoping for it to stick? Card carrying republican here, but really, is this really newsworthy? The reason that there is no middle road in politics is because the media seeks to demonize and alienate anyone as long they think people will read it. Republicans and Democrats alike. Think for yourselves people.

Excuse me, but...

...she had a two day warning that the storms were heading to Nosth Carolina, and the weather service was projecting SEVERE storms. There was no secret that we were going to get walloped, and she should have returned early.

Never defend nonfeasance. She had a duty and she failed to deliver.

Storms

With the weather service projecting SEVERE storms maybe she should have evacuated North Carolina.

AWOL Gov.

I for one am very appreciative of this story. All the other non-Fox News stations all lean towards the left & defend non-conservative points of view. We do not want anyone in harm’s way, but the least our Governor could do is be in contact with Emergency Management as the danger hits not hours after everything has happened & people have died. Being the Governor is a full time 24-7 job not a Monday – Friday 9-5 job. If she can’t handle it maybe she should step down.

Where oh where?

So, they knew where she was, but we don't? 62 tornadoes rip through the state but the emergency management director didn't even speak with the Governor until at least 5 hours later? And even in response to your queries, Pearson STILL doesn't tell the public where the governor was or even within 200 miles of where the Governor was?
How are we supposed to believe the Gov's spokesperson if she still isn't being honest about the Governor's whereabouts? 62 tornadoes, two dozen dead, millions in damages and the Governor isn't even in touch with anyone in the state publicly until at least 11pm?
And yes, everyone in the state (except the Governor) knew the threat of serious weather was well established.

I thought news outlet were supposed to be bias

Its becoming very clear that your station has become very right winged and conservative..you might as well stick a sign in the parking lot of WWAY showing your support for the republican party..you need to switch to FOX so it can clear to everyone who you are supporting..So Im guessing you wanted Bev Perdue in harms way on Saturday just because she wasnt forthcoming on her whereabouts..what were you doing Saturday? She is a paid employee of the state and she can get a Saturday off, cant she? What counts is what she will do to help the cleanup process and the families that have lost everything! Stop getting mad everytime someone dosent answer your inquiries..yall sound like 2 year olds pitching a fit when you dont get a response..you have done actual stories of people who wont give you the time of the day..GROW UP AND BECOME JOURNALISTS!!

Her response to people

Her response to people affected by the storms was to make sure they contact FEMA so the government can help them out. Where was she? I don't care where she was, you all voted for her, and for the rest of her term she is "on call" and all of her time should be accounted for since she is on my dime. Who paid for her trip, better be coming out of her bank account, not my paycheck.

Thanks for the laugh

Nothing funnier than you liberals getting so angry when one of your idols gets exposed as an incompetent screw-off.

I agree. Our governor is a

I agree. Our governor is a joke. God have mercy on North Carolina.

Fair and Balanced...

has WWAY on opposite sides of the fence from the always-fluffy WECT who couldn't/wouldn't ask a politician a hard question if their ratings depended on it. Over "there" we have the "Fran's fans" and "Weller's wheels" while WWAY is digging into the meat of the story.
