South Brunswick High athlete mourned by classmates

BOLIVIA, NC (AP) - Scores of mourners packed the bleachers at South Brunswick High School to pay tribute to a stand-out football player shot to death in a parking lot during a weekend gathering.

Marcus Hankins, 19, died early Saturday after being injured during a fight following a private wedding reception at the Democratic headquarters building in the town of Supply.

The Brunswick County Sheriff Department is investigating. Sheriff's spokeswoman April Stanley said Tuesday no one has been charged in the death.

Students held candles and many cried as speakers delivered words of encouragement during Monday's campus service. A sheriff's deputy and local pastor also appealed for less violence among teens.

AS I WAS LISTENING TO THE

AS I WAS LISTENING TO THE RADIO YESTERDAY, A YOUNG LADY MADE THE COMMENT THAT THERE IS NOTHING TO DO. WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL YOU HAD TO TAKE AN ELECTIVE (SOME TYPE OF TRADE) AND BE PROFICIENT IN IT BEFORE YOU GRADUATED. THE GIRLS MOSTLY TOOK HOME ECONOMICS (SEWING & COOKING) AND THE BOYS TOOK MECHANICS, ELECTRONICS, CARPENTRY, AND OR BRICKLAYING. YOU WERE GIVEN PROJECTS AND YOU HAD TO PASS. SO THAT WHEN YOU FINSISHED SCHOOL YOU WOULD HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF DOING SOMETHING TO MAKE A DECENT LIVING FOR YOURSELF; IF YOU DIDN'T GO TO COLLEGE. THE SCHOOLS DON'T HAVE THESE ELECTIVES ANYMORE. THEY ALL WENT TO COLLEGES WHERE YOU HAD TO PAY TO TAKE A TRADE. I THINK IF THEY WOULD BRINGS THESE BACK INTO THE SCHOOLS, YOU WOULD HAVE LESS IDLED MINDS.

I DO FEEL SORRY FOR THE FAMILIES THAT HAVE TO ENDURE SUCH A TRAGEDY. MAY GOD STRENGHTEN YOU AND GIVE YOU PEACE AT THIS DIFFICULT TIME.
