Wilmington council to consider parking changes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A decision by Wilmington City Council tonight could soon make it more expensive to park downtown.

The city is trying to overcome a projected $800,000 shortfall in next year's parking fund.

Proposed changes include extending the time for charging for on-street parking to 9 p.m. Council will also consider changing the first 90-minutes free in the city's Second and Market Street decks to first hour free as well as increasing the the nightly/event/daily maximum fee from $5 to $7.

Council may also change the current one-hour on-street parking limit between 000-300 blocks of North Front Street to two-hours to make it consistent with the rest of the Central Business District.

City council meets at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Why are late night crowds allowed to park on the street for free? If city leaders are OK charging store patrons to park during the day, why not at night?

Raise the Rates???

Boy, that'll fix the problem! Lengthen the hours to 9 to suck money out of the folks that go downtown to eat but give free parking to the bar crowds.

Seems to me that those actions would give folks another excuse to go to Mayfaire to shop and eat.

If they hadn't shoved a

If they hadn't shoved a convention center down the throats of the people who didn't want it, maybe they would be able to cover the $800,000. But, wait, they would have found another way to waste it, so nevermind.

What a joke! I have an answer to this problem. Lay off eight people downtown who make 100,000. per year. Sound like a plan?

How about not blocking off

How about not blocking off the parking decks during the Azalea festival? That way they can make some money from filling it up. The parking was horrible and very sloppy.

Everyone who either voted or neglected to vote for these idiots...DESERVES what they get! Make it MORE expensive to go downtown...LOL...they just DON'T GET IT, do they? MORE of a reason for me to stay on this side of town!

I hope they do raise the

I hope they do raise the rates and hope it prevents people from coming downtown and supporting local business! Downtown needs more visitors not less! As if the economy wasn't bad enough, let's raise the parking fees! IDIOTS!!!

Great Idea!

Discourage shoppers and diners from coming downtown and then let the drunks and hooligans have free parking all night long...Brilliant!

I'm with you brother

Raise the rates all you want.

I don't shop downtown because of the meters, and high prices.

Hopefully, someone will propose no meters and then people will shop downtown.
