NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- An accident this morning involving a school bus and a fire truck left the bus being towed away.

It all happened at the intersection of North College Road and Murrayville Road in New Hanover County.

Investigators says the fire truck had to make a sudden stop after the car in front of it stopped short. The bus did not stop in time and rear-ended the fire truck.

There were no students on the bus when it happened. No one was injured.

The New Hanover County Fire Department estimates damage to the fire truck at less than $15,000.

The bus drivers don't paid

The bus drivers don't paid well enough to care about the safety of the children they are transporting.

Bus Drivers

I see this too often. It is a wonder that there are not more accidents. Driving to fast for conditions, following to close, eating and drinking while driving, are all common errors. Drivers become to familiar with their busses and they lose track. Busses do not stop on a dime and they are heavy and they take a lot of room to stop particularly when there are a lot of students on board. They cannot be designed to stop quickly as one would like, the laws of motion come to play "Bodies that are set in motion will remain in motion until an equal and opposite force stops it." Good thing that there were not students on board, some of them could very well have landed on the hosebed of the fire engine and ended up in the hospital. I think that school buss drivers need to renew their privalege, both classroom and road driving, to drive a scholl buss every year before school starts.

Who's driving

Whos the county got driving the buses these days, second school bus involved accident this week. Monday afternoon my wife saw a driver with a bus load of kids eating while she was driving. Two very good reasons we go out of our way to drive our daughter to school ourselves.

Are you kidding?..

I work down on Shipyard and I cannot tell you how many times I have seen a bus (with children) running the red light at Shipyard and Carolina Beach Road. I've begun to take bus #'s. Who hires these folks?
