President will not release photos of bin Laden's body

READ MORE:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The photos of Osama bin Laden after his death are going to be kept sealed.

President Barack Obama has decided against releasing them, amid concern that the gruesome images could inflame Muslim anger.

Just yesterday, CIA Director Leon Panetta said a photo would be released. But Obama revealed his decision today in an interview taped for CBS's "60 Minutes."

There had been a spirited debate within the government over the possible impact of their release. The administration has tried to strike a balance -- celebrating the success of the covert operation and addressing any doubts that it was bin Laden who was killed -- without unnecessarily offending sensitivities in the Muslim world.

In advance of Obama's decision, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee -- Republican Mike Rogers -- said he was concerned that the photos could be seen as a "trophy" that would inflame US critics.

The photos have been described by several sources as gruesome. They say one picture shows part of bin Laden's skull blown off.

Must

be nice to be leader of a terrorist organization, get killed and be honored by the people that killed you. People that died on 9/11 didn't get a proper burial in some instances...WHY would we give him one. I would have embalmed him with pigs blood, wrapped him in a pig carcass and sunk him to the bottom of a hog run off pond! I would then dip all bullets being sent overseas in pigs blood and drop pamphlets to explain what will happen to them if they get shot according to their precious Allah. IMHO...we only play nice to those who follow the Geneva Convention rules....if you don't follow them...our gloves are off!

Please Mr. President

Please Mr. President publicly Osama died photo to all the world to see.

Bin Laden Photos

I don't understand where "respect" comes into the picture. We were given no respect by this man from minute one. As for fear of Muslin anger, I remain confused. What they are saying is that it is okay to kill this man, but you have to be respectful from that point on. The body being disposed of within 24 hrs sound a little fishy to me. Again, you can kill this man but then you have to be respectful? How convenient is that? Any of these people who would be offended by us having proof are going to react regardless. Can they not understand us wanting reassurance that this man is gone from harms way? They shouted and cheered when all the innocent Americans died at this mans command. I understand that we do not exactly see things the same, but give me a break. I bet if the government could find a way to make money selling the pictures they would be mass producing them. The only problem is they know that they would sell only a few and then they would be reproduced and put on the internet. Besides, you can get a view of what they are describing as gruesome in the average theater now a days. Oh, they are making money on that one so I guess it’s okay to show. Obama is getting credit for all this being done, but he is not the one on the front line. Our upstanding citizens are the one’s dying and he’s got body guards. I often wonder which side Mr. Obama is really on. Maybe we should bring our troops home and guard our own country. I think we are going to need them very soon. I guess it’s still okay to say “God Bless us All”…..

Yes

Yes, please bring our troops home before they accomplish anything else positive over there. The fact that Obama is commander-in-chief and is getting credit is driving me crazy.

Lame Excuse

If killing Osama is celebrated as a blow to terrorism, it will only be logical to show the proof and leave no room for any doubt! This is the dumbest screw-up ever

I'm glad

Either you believe US Navy Seal Team 6 killed OBL or you don't, photos are too easily faked to change anyone's opinion. Releasing photos would just add to the circus that is US politics.

You are soo right now go

You are soo right now go take a photo of yourself and throw darts at it!

I believe.

While I believe the US Navy SEALS, the photos certainly could not have been any more gruesome than Americans plunging to their deaths at terminal velocity from the Twin Towers on 9/11. Remember Daniel Pearl getting his head sliced off with a dull knife by KSM while alive?

And I should show concern for those who would commit those acts, and continue in their planning to do so?

I for one want to see the results of a trillion dollars of our taxes money went last 10 years. I want the MONEY shot! :)

Still, I have no doubts.

I agree with you 110%. Let

I agree with you 110%. Let me see the money shot. You couldn't have said it any better.
