Students donate $1,200 to tsunami relief effort

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A Wilmington elementary school donated some big bucks to help the victims of the tsunami in Japan.

Forest Hills Global Elementary School's Student Council presented a check to the Red Cross for the tsunami victims today.

In April the school hosted a "Jeans Day," where students donated one dollar for the privilege of wearing jeans to school for a day.

A second fundraiser called "Change for Change" raised $700 when students gathered loose change from around their home.

"The way it can help them is it can get them new buildings, new clothes, new furniture, and they're probably going through a lot of things right now like confusion," fourth grader Mackenzie Jefferson said. "I would be scared, too."

Forest Hills raised more than $1,200 for the victims in Japan.
