Driver sentenced for drunk driving crash that killed man standing in yard


COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A Columbus County man will spend at least a dozen years behind bars for killing a man with his pick-up last year.

Thomas Paradise hit and killed Miguel Toribio Ascencio, who was standing outside his home, March 6, 2010. Highway Patrol said paradise's blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit. Paradise hit Toribio's cousin and their cars before driving into a field and running away.

Paradise pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder and DWI. He will spend between 12 years, seven months and 15 years, 10 month in prison.
