Wilmington Blizzard captures first hoops title


ROCK HILL,SC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington based 16 and under Wilmington Blizzard AAU basketball team beat the Charlotte Jets 55-49 on Sunday to claim first place in the Rock Hill Big Shots basketball tournament. North Brunswick Scorpion Jeremy Young was named MVP of the tournament after the conclusion of Sunday's title game. Laney's Kenneth Grady and Topsail's Matt Gilgo also earned all-tournament honors. Sunday's title contest was a rematch of Wilmington vs. Charlotte from seven weeks ago. The Jets beat the Blizzard by 40 in March, but Wilmington emerged as the winner in May.

The Wilmington based 17 and under Flight 22 Blizzard Athletics team also played in the Rock Hill Big Shots tournament. Flight 22 beat the Carolina Ravens to get to the title game. In the semi finals Drew Combs scored 12 points with 9 assists. James Kenan's Jeremy Smith had 14 points. West Bladen's D.J. Mason led Flight 22 with 21. Unfortunately another Ravens team beat Flight 22 Blizzard Athletics 59-40 in the finals. This was the fifth consecutive Big Shots title game for Flight 22 Blizzard Athletics. Jeremy Smith and D.J. Mason earned all-tournament honors.
