Feds probe NC company over planned overseas deal

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Federal investigators think a Raleigh company was trying to illegally sell surveillance equipment to a company in North Africa.

A search warrant unsealed Friday details a March raid at the offices of Law Enforcement Associates.

The federal Commerce Department seized a van equipped with listening devices that was slated to be sold to a Moroccan company.

The Commerce Department says only the US government and telecommunications companies can obtain permission to export such surveillance gear.

Federal investigators think the company has also shipped equipment to Egypt, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

No criminal charges appear to have been filed. A call to the company was not immediately returned Monday.
