Researchers to spend month digging at Brunswick Town, Fort Anderson

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- For the next month, archaeologists will study the historic Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson area to see if they can uncover any more information about the site.

Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson is a colonial ghost town in ruins. Anthropology students from around the United States want to know more details about the historic site, so they're digging it up.

"When the soldiers were camping here using this facility as a quarantine station for blockade runners, we're trying to discover what type of structures they were living in, if it was tents or sheds, to help Brunswick Town understand its past for the Civil War for the sesquicentennial celebration," anthropology instructor Tom Beaman said.

The anthropologists hope to find more artifacts than the previous dig in 2009, which uncovered more than 23,000 specimens.
