WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Three UNCW grads are proof a cool idea can mean hot business, even in a tough economy. Their serve-it-yourself yogurt shop has three locations in the Wilmington area with a fourth on the way.

Perhaps more interesting than the concept at the Fuzzy Peach are its owners, who are all 2008 graduates of UNCW.

"We all got our separate degrees, went our separate ways, each took different jobs after graduating, and about a year after graduation, after we had been working, we decided, 'Hey we want to start our own business," co-owner and CFO Wells Struble said.

COO Jason Nista said, "We were bored in our day jobs, and we were looking around for something that might interest us and something we could do with as much capital as we had, and we found this idea in California, and we thought this would work well here in Wilmington, so we went for it."

It has worked well. So well, in fact, that the team just opened a third location downtown on Front Street, and a fourth location is opening in a month in Monkey Junction.

They say reasons for their product's popularity include fewer calories and fresh fruit, which you cannot find at your everyday ice cream parlor. From peanut butter to cake batter its flavors are as unique as its serving style and keeps customers coming back.

And as the business takes off, the Fuzzy Peach team says they are ready to keep moving forward.

"We're focusing on our franchise business, so we are going to start selling franchises hopefully across the country within a short amount of time after our next store opens," Struble says.

The Fuzzy Peach is also harnessing the power of the internet to grow the business. The company's website includes a page about franchise opportunities.

Fuzzy Peach

It is really great to see a positive story about downtown for a change. I am at Java Dog early every morning and have been watching the progress of these young people.

Good on them!!

May I suggest outside chairs and tables. I would come down after I take the dogs home. Wilmington in summer, is an outdoors kind of town.

Good luck to them.
