Chadbourn Police investigating Memorial Weekend murder

CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) -- One man is dead and another is sitting in jail, charged with murder, after an early morning shooting in Chadbourn.

Chadbourn Police arrested and charged Curtis Jamale Gause of Chadbourn with the murder of Kenwick Octavian Best. The shooting happened early Saturday morning in a small warehouse behind a home on Broadway Road, near Chadbourn Middle School.

Many neighbors either didn't know about the incident or were not willing to comment, but Teresa Griffin of Evergreen was visiting her mother in Chadbourn and said she didn't know anything about the murder, but she has been the victim of violence in Chadbourn.

"I was taking a lady home one time, and a guy shot through the back of my car and shot her in the neck, and I didn't have anything to do with it," Griffin said. "Crime is getting really bad around here. People has no job, so it's just rough."

Gause is in custody and has a court appointment set for next week.

Police continue to investigate the murder.
