Port, river issues focus of joint federal effort in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Daily operations along the Cape Fear River will be more efficient thanks to a new joint effort in Wilmington.

The Interagency Operations Center on Medical Center Drive will bring the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement all under one roof.

Coast Guard leaders say the new center will make daily operations at the State Port of Wilmington more efficient and make it easier for the agencies to work together during emergencies like hurricanes.

"If something big happens we're all in the same room, we're all sharing the same information, we're all on the same page," said Capt. Anthony Popiel, US Coast Guard Sector Commander. "It really makes for effective incident management when we have a facility like this."

The facility will house more than 70 employees from the various agencies.
