WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Hammerheads step out of USL play tonight at Legion Stadium.
The pro soccer team is in first round action in the Lamar Hunt US Oen Cup. Wilmington will host the Central Florida Kraze out of the USL's Professional Development League.
The Hammerheads have hosted several big name teams in past US Open Cups, including a win over Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire in 2009.
"The league is the most important part," Hammerheads coach David Irving said. "If we can get through two rounds and get an MLS team, and that's the fun part. Open Cup is the fun part of our season."
If the Hammerheads beat the Kraze, they will take on the winner of the USL Pro's Charlotte Eagles and the Carolina Dynamo.
The hammerheads are coming off a busy weekend. They lost to the Eagles 3-0 Saturday after topping Pittsburgh 3-1 Friday.
No time for rest. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
