FIRST ON 3: Onslow County declares State of Emergency because of fire

ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A wildfire burning mainly in Pender County has led Onslow County to declare a State of Emergency. County Commission Vice Chair Paul Buchanan signed the order this afternoon.

The order specifically mentions the "area of the Stump Sound Township... which runs from the Pender-Onslow County line northward to NC Hwy. 53 and then east along Hwy. 53 to William Gurganus Road, and from William Gurganus Road to Dawson Cabin Road intersection with US Hwy. 17, running Southeast along NC Hwy. 210 to Everett's Creek and New River."

The declaration authorizes the sheriff to order an evacuation as necessary within the affected area. It also advises limiting travel in the area due to health concerns, limited visibility from smoke and emergency response activities.
