Pro surfers give kids lesson in having fun

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- The surf was up at Wrightsville Beach today.

Hurley and the Sweetwater Surf Shop sponsored a surf contest for about 80 local children.

The "Rip My Shred Stick" tour is a travelling event. Our coast was its sixth stop.

Aside from the contest, participants also created their own custom Hurley board shorts.

The free program encouraged kids to not only show off their skills, but more importantly have fun while hanging out with several professional surfers.

"It's just our way to give back to the community that gives so much to us," Colin Herlihy said. "We're all surfers. We want to give back to the kids and kind of show them the right way to go."

The "winner," or whoever was deemed to be having the most fun, went home with a digital sports camera.
