RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Wake County schools are looking for
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Monday that the school
system is trying to increase the number of minority teachers
because the school population is no longer majority white.
Superintendent Tony Tata says the current teaching staff is 85
percent Caucasian, 12 percent African American and 3 percent
Hispanic. The system has a minority student body of just over 50
percent for the first time this year.
Tata says the county has hired 27 new minority teachers in the
past two months and more jobs are available.
Recruiters from the school system are looking as far west as New
Mexico for minority teachers.
