WILMINGTON,NC (news release)-– The Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League are proud to announce that Daniel Aldrich was crowned the 2011 TD Amaritrade Home Run Derby champion, belting 14 total home runs and bettering Victor Roache in the final round in front of 20, 578 people at TD Amaritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
Aldrich, the freshman outfielder from the College of Charleston who earned National Freshman of the Year honors, had his father, Charles, pitching to him as he outslugged the 2011 NCAA home run leader Roache 4-2 in the final round.
“The Wilmington Sharks congratulate Daniel on winning the TD Amaritrade Home Run Derby,” Sharks general manager Andrew Aguilar said. “We look forward to his continued success with the Sharks this summer and in the future.”
Aldrich tallied 10 homers and Roache hit four homers in the first two rounds to advance to the finals. In the final round, all home runs were taken off the board and both players received eight outs per at-bat. Aldrich opened the final round by hitting four out of the park during his appearance. Aldrich had just two home runs with one out remaining, but hit back-to-back blasts to right field before recording his eighth and final out.
With seven outs and no home runs, Roache hit back-to-back homers before his final out of the event to give Aldrich the title.
Players were allowed to use their old bats that were outlawed under NCAA restrictions which went into effect this year after teams produced low home run totals at last month’s College World Series.
With the Wilmington Sharks this summer, Aldrich leads the team with 26 RBI. Aldrich is also tied for the team lead with three home runs through July 1.
The Wilmington Sharks are members of Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
