WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A Wilmington neighborhood is shocked and looking for answers after a woman was found dead in her home early this morning.
Around 3:17 a.m. Monday police were called out to 338 Pine Valley Drive. Once inside officers found a body.
Residents of this quiet neighborhood are shocked as word spread that one of their neighbors was killed. Police say the victim was 59-year-old Carol Johnson. Several neighbors told us she had lived in the home for more than ten years.
Family members of the victim were visibly distraught. They declined to talk about their loss.
The news of Johnson's death, though, left some neighbors uneasy Monday morning, but many say they still feel safe despite what happened on Pine Valley Drive.
"We were attracted to the neighborhood because it is so quiet and it is so stable... just, you know, like any neighborhood in Wilmington: safe," neighbor Beth Gaglione said.
"I feel safe still, but it's just shocking, because in a neighborhood like this and our neighborhood across the way nothing like this ever happens," neighbor Kelly Bowers said.
Other neighbors who declined to go on camera say Johnson was engaged, but they were not sure if her fiancé was living with her.
There's no word yet on how Johnson died. Wilmington police say the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (910) 343-3600.
