NC man dies in fall from mountain

LAKE LURE, NC (AP) -- Rutherford County officials say a Sylva
man has died after he fell while climbing a mountain near Lake
Lure.

Detective Billy Scoggins says 29-year-old Joshua Earl Haddock
suffered a broken neck when he fell 30 to 40 feet.

Scoggins says Haddock was flown to Mission Hospital in Asheville
where he was pronounced dead Saturday.

Haddocks had gone with some friends to Rumbling Bald Mountain
north of Lake Lure for a climb.

Scoggins says Haddock was rappelling down a cliff when his rope
came loose from a climbing pin. Scoggins says friends heard Haddock
fall and hurried to try to help.

Haddock had come home to visit his parents for the Independence
Day holiday weekend from the University of Cincinnati, where he was
working on his doctorate in philosophy.
