FIRST ON 3: Plane makes safe emergency landing at ILM

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The pilot of a small plane made a successful belly landing at Wilmington International Airport just after 11 a.m.

Airport director Jon Rosborough says the pilot could not get the landing gear of his Cessna 182 to go down during a flight from Harnett County to Jacksonville. The pilot circled the airport to burn off fuel before making a landing without the gear at the end of Runway 6.

Rosborough says the experienced pilot's expertise meant that the airport did not have to shut down to other traffic before, during or since the landing.

Rosborough says one runway is closed as crews work to remove the plane and figure out what went wrong.
