Butner youth counselor fired after sex allegation

BUTNER, NC (AP) -- State officials have fired a youth counselor
and launched an investigation into charges that the counselor had
sex with those in a detention center in Butner.

Juvenile justice authorities say Shannon West was fired and five
employees have been placed on leaving pending the outcome of the
investigation.

The Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
began looking into the matter last month after allegations that
West had sexual encounters with juveniles.

The case was turned over to Butner's Department of Public
Safety.

West is charged with two counts of sexual activity by a
custodian.

He is being held in the Granville County jail under a $50,000
bond. It was unclear if West has an attorney
