Police arrest man in case of missing Kinston woman

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The ex-boyfriend of a missing Kinston mother is one of two suspects arrested after a woman's dismembered body was found in Texas.

Raleigh police say 32-year-old Grant Ruffin Hayes and his wife, 39-year-old Amanda Perry Hayes were taken into custody at 1 a.m. Monday and charged with murder in the death of Laura Jean Ackerson.

The arrests were made in Kinston.

Grant Hayes is the father of 27-year-old Laura Ackerson's two children.

Ackerson was reported missing July 18 after failing to pick up her children at Hayes' home.

Chief Deputy Craig Brady of Fort Bend County, Texas, said it appears the Kinston business owner may have been killed in North Carolina and taken to Texas.

Ackerson's car was found at an apartment complex in northwest Raleigh on July 20.
