Asheville area cell tower gets public support

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) -- A 150-foot communications tower being
designed to resemble a white pine tree will soar over the upscale
Biltmore Forest suburb of Asheville if residents approve an
upcoming test run.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Thursday that town
officials plan to launch a balloon to demonstrate the height and
placement of the tower, which is needed to improve reception for
police dispatchers and cell phone users.

Town administrator Nelson Smith says officials hope that the
literal trial balloon they plan to tether near the public works
building will help determine what people think about the idea.

Smith says persistent problems with wireless phone service have
generated support for the project so far.
