CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - A day after announcing it had fired football coach Butch Davis, North Carolina also will start searching for a new athletic director.

Dick Baddour says he plans to step down after 14 years as soon as the school can hire a replacement. Baddour was entering the final year of a three-year contract that expires next June. He says it's important for his successor to hire the next football coach instead of inheriting a hire.

Chancellor Holden Thorp says Baddour will attend the school's hearing before the NCAA infractions committee in October, then serve out the rest of his contract in another position.
The school fired Davis on Wednesday amid an NCAA investigation
into improper benefits and academic misconduct in the program.

Gone

William Friday just made a statement on a local news channel that was rigth on. It's time to cut salaries, cut jobs, and bring down the so called prestige of sports on campuses statewide. Too much money paid and too much freedom for the athletes.
How many of the athletes graduate with more than a 2.0 GPA? Time to open the box on that one and expose it for what it really is. Having recently worked for a University in NC, it was widely known on the campus the atheletes were allowed to play with less than average grade point standings. Used to be they got kicked off or suspended for this but not now. Seems as though the mighty universities in this state would rather cater to those who wanted more sports than academics. What a sad state we have come to for this.
The latest lawsuit from the suspended player was just a small example of what actually goes on. The player only wanted back so some pro scout could see him and maybe recruit him. He never once said in all the news shows that he was sorry and made a serious mistake and wanted to make it right. Sad example

UNC

Although I am no tar heel fan (go wolfpack!) I am disturbed by this episode in ACC athletics.

I think the problem is rampant throughout college sports. Until we hold athletes to the same standards as other students and stop worshiping our sports programs we will have scandals!

Maybe if athletes had to carry the same GPA as other students to be accepted into college, and once accepted they would be released from the team if they didn't maintain sufficient grades to remain in good standing things would be different.

Sports are fun, and many valuable lessons can be learned from being on an athletic team, but we should be building character as well. Special treatment, deals, exceptions and cheating do NOT accomplish the goal.

A storm is on its way!

I have been an alumni of UNC since 1997. I hate to say it but the rumor around the Chapel Hill area is Basketball is next. I hope not but two assistant coaches are said to be involved and 3 current players. If so I hope its not going to take place till after the season ends. Cars,Cheating and cash is what the story is. WHO KNOWS?! Hope its untrue. We will get through it! GO HEELS!!!!!

I heard the same rumor last week.......

I have several friends at the front office at UNC Athletics. They are hearing the same thing. I sure hope its all just rumors, but the bad news is the football thing started the same way. COME ON HEELS GET IT TOGETHER!! I will be a TARHEEL till I die!!!
