WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- (SATURDAY UPDATE) Wilmington Police have released the name of the victim of Friday afternoon's shooting. David Carroll, 42, is at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Carroll is in fair condition.
Police have officially charged Reginald Gagnier with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
(FRIDAY) UNCW Police have found and arrested the suspect in a shooting at the Seahawk Square Apartments Friday afternoon. Reginald Gagnier is now in the custody of Wilmington Police. They say they will charge Gagnier with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after he is through with questioning.
Wilmington Police say the shooting was reported at 4:21 p.m. The victim received non-life threatening injuries to the shoulder and drove himself to the hospital.
Police had searched the woods around UNCW for the shooter. They also used the SABLE helicopter to help search for him.
Samuel Jarman, a witness at the apartment complex, says he didn't expect to see something like this happen so close to campus.
"I heard a gun shot, we walked outside and I was like what the hell is going on," said Jarman. "The guy has got a gun in the air, waving it in the air walking back and forth just pointing it and waving it at people."
Wilmington Police say the victim and shooter knew each other and were having a dispute. Jarman says it's a miracle no one was killed.
“If he shot any where towards any of these buildings, it would go straight through the wall and no telling who would probably be hit,” said Jarman.
