UPDATE: Police catch driver who ran after fight with girlfriend led to car accident

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- An accident this morning in Wilmington left one man startled and not knowing who hit him. It all happened on the corner of Carolina Beach Road and St. Andrew's Drive.

A woman at the scene told WWAY it started when she got in a fight with her boyfriend who then drove away and ran the stop sign at St. Andrew's, T-boning another car. The man then got out of his car and ran away.

"Right at Echo Farms East, St. Andrews Drive, I saw a vehicle that kept coming out running a stop sign," said Ernest Webb, who's car was hit. "I tried to swerve and avoid him, but he hit me in the back quarter panel of my car. I spun around maybe about three times and landed on the side of the road here. After I got my composure I took a look, and I saw a guy running down St. Andrew's Drive."

Police later tracked down and arrested Calron Michael Williams. He's charged with assault on a female, hit and run and failing to stop for a stop sign. Williams is out of jail on $1,500 bond.

A better ending to this story

"After I got my composure I took a look, and I saw a guy running down St. Andrew's Drive."

"That's when I realized that the car had gotten really messed up in the accident, and the accelerator was stuck wide-open. I careened down Saint Andrews Drive and did my best to stop the car, but wasn't successful until I had run the poor guy down.

When I finally did get the car to stop I threw it into park, only to find out that the linkage has been damaged. The car lurched into reverse and backed over the guy. I finally got it stopped again, but when I stepped out of the car I realized that the front tire had come to rest right on his chest.

There wasn't much we could do for him."

No....instead we charged him with assault, hit and run, running a stop sign, and the magistrate (who must have run out of fingers and toes for addition) released him on a whoppin' $1500 bond.

"Have a nice day, sir. Remember to run faster and further next time."
