National Weather Service finds no evidence of tornado touchdown Sunday in Pender Co.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Strong/severe thunderstorms prompted reports of funnel clouds in Pender County around 5:40 PM Sunday afternoon. However, National Weather Service damage assessment team has investigated the area and found no evidence of an actual tornado touchdown at the surface.

Still, thunderstorms produced heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning through Sunday evening. Additional reports of funnel clouds from New Hanover county were noted around 8 PM. One Whiteville resident was injured by a lightning strike earlier in the day.

The system responsible for this activity has pulled out of the state.
