WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Although Irene is pulling away from our area, the strong storm is leaving reminders of her force in her wake.

With hurricane force wind gusts and extremely dangerous surf, Irene hit Wrightsville hard. The beach town was boarded up and hunkered down to wait out the storm. Much of the island lost power late Friday night, and as of Saturday morning, many were still without.

Beach erosion remains a problem as Irene pushed the surf all the way up to the dunes. The waves crashed for hours on end, and when they finally retreated, erosion was evident.

There are also two large trees down, one on Wrightsville Avenue near Eastwood Road and another along Eastwood Road.

Power Outage

Hopefully there are no power outages, but if there are, the best money I ever spent was $29 on a Solar/Crank Lantern (never needs replacement batteries) sold by LL Bean that I ordered online right off their website. Once you are on the LL Bean webiste, search for "Solar Lantern"....they come in handy during power outages and are also great for camping.
