WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Former UNCW Athletics Director Kelly Mehrtens has a new job. She has joined the staff at the University of Maryland as deputy athletics director for internal operations, according to a release on the school's official athletics site UMTerps.com.

Mehrtens will have oversight of the business, information technology, human resources and equipment-room units in the athletic department in addition to sport supervision.
"I am excited to join the Terrapin family," said Mehrtens. "It is an honor to be part of a great academic institution with great leadership in both the athletics department and on the entire campus."

Mehrtens, who resigned from her job at UNCW on September 27, 2010, after three years in Wilmington, currently serves as a senior consultant to the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. There she helps to develop, coordinate and implement educational training projects for sports organizations at every level.

"I want to thank (Maryland Athletic Director) Kevin (Anderson) for the opportunity to work with an outstanding group of coaches, staff and student-athletes," Mehrtens said. "And I look forward to working together with all Terrapin fans to support and promote the vision and goals of Maryland Athletics."

Mehrtens also served as the SWA at Kansas (2003-2007) and Illinois (1998-2003) and worked in the athletics departments at Miami and Northeastern. Mehrtens earned NCAA All-America status in the discus while earning her bachelor's degree at Alabama. She also holds a masters in education from Illinois.

Mehrtens to Maryland

All Maryland fans can mark this day on your calender. At least Mehrtens will not be able to wreck the Terrapin athletic program single handed, but I am sure she will give it a good try. It only took her a couple of years to dissolve the Seahawk Basketball Program and leave everything in shambles. I give her 2 or 3 years in College Park and You all will figure Her out. We should have known when KU flew her in here on a University aircraft they were happy to get her out of town. Good Luck to Maryland on this hire.

Mehrtens to Maryland

Well, at least she won't be able to bring down the Maryland athletic department single handed. She almost did it here in Wilmington. She will last up there about as long as she did here. Until all of her shenanigans and backstabbing come to light. Then it will be bye-bye College Park.
