Firefighters hurt fighting apartment fire


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Two Wilmington firefighter were taken to the hospital with minor burns while fighting a fire at Osprey Landing Apartments on Fall Drive. A WFD spokesman said the firefighters were hurt by falling debris.

Investigators have determined the fire was an accident caused by an outdoor heating/AC unit. Firefighters say the building suffered $200,000 worth plus $100,000 damage to contents.

The Red Cross is helping the people who lived in the eight units in the building, who were affected.

The injured firefighters have been placed on injury leave for the rest of the weekend and will be re-evaluated on Monday for duty status. The burns were caused by falling embers that managed to get under there protective clothing.
