9/11 5k run honors fallen NYC firefighter

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) -- A 5k walk/run in honor of a New York firefighter who died on 9/11 was held at CFCC after the memorial ceremony.

It's called the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Run.

Folks walked or ran the more than three miles in honor of Stephen Siller, who gave his life that fateful day. He ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center with more than sixty pounds of gear on his back.

Two New Hanover County firefighters decided to run with their gear on to remember Siller's heroic actions.

"The least we can do is do this in memory with another brother firefighter," said Mike Whitwan, a Lt. with New Hanover County Fire Services. "We didn't do a tower, but hats off to all those guys. They are really good firemen."

Phoenix Connections sponsored the event and all donations went towards veterans, the homeless and disabled in our area.
