WILMINGTON, NC (AP) -- A collection primarily focused on memorabilia from college and professional football and basketball is on display at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
The John Gunn Collection also includes publications related to professional baseball and military sports programs. It includes books, magazines, game-day programs, rule books, photographs and other items.
At one point, Gunn said he believed the collection was the largest private sports library collection in the country. Gunn now lives in Pensacola, FL, but his ties to the Wilmington area date back to 1953, when he was a Marine stationed at Cherry Point.
The exhibit opened last week at the Randall Library and continues through Dec. 15. It's open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
