WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Coast Guard Cutter Diligence is a common sight along Wilmington's riverfront, but lately you may have noticed it a little askew.
While in port the Coast Guard is doing maintenance inside the Diligence and to do that fuel has to be transferred from the opposite side of the ship causing the ship to list or lean.
ENS Andrew Price says the tilting ship does present challenges to the crew and those who still live on board, but he says the tilt should be reduced soon.
"Our engineers have definitely taken the time to do the calculations," ENS Price said. "This is an eight degree list, and the Diligence can actually sustain a 45 degree list before the decks touch the water, so this is relatively minor."
The pier next to the Diligence has been closed because of the work. It will not open until December, which is when the maintenance should be finished.
