CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) -- A Columbus County family is grieving tonight after the death of a 10-year-old girl. Loved ones say they found Jasmine McClain last night hanging by a belt in her room. The family says the girl's death was an accident, but investigators believe it's was intentional.

Jasmine as a happy, friendly child.

"She was a beautiful girl. Happy go-lucky. She loved to dance," Jasmine's grandmother Frances Smith said.

"She was full of life," family friend Linda Ward said. "She's gone, but she is still here with us. She will never leave us."

The family says around 9:30 p.m. Monday the 10-year-old went to her room to get ready for bed. Several minutes later Jasmine's mom Samantha West walked by her room and saw that her daughter was not in bed. She walked in to find Jasmine hanging from a belt in her room.

"Sam started screaming and calling for me, and I went back there, and I lost it," Smith said.

The family says the girl would often swing on her belts from a beam in her room.

"She played with her belts and stuff like that," Smith said. "She didn't like to wear them, but she loved to play with them."

The family thinks Jasmine slipped while playing with her belt. Nothing was underneath her for her to step on.

Chadborn Police and the State Bureau of Investigation were on scene Monday night into early Tuesday morning. The SBI says Chadbourn Police Chief Steven Shaw asked for the agency's assistance.

The police department says at this point evidence leads them to believe the girl's death was a suicide despite the family's belief that Jasmine accidentally killed herself. Chadbourn Police say they area close to wrapping up the investigation.

Family members say a memorial is in the works for Jasmine. They are waiting to get her body back after an autopsy.

Doesn't add up. She would

Doesn't add up. She would have to have been swinging from a belt that was looped around the beam in the closet. Furthermore, she would have had to be capable of doing a pull up for her to accidently get her head snared in the belt. How many frail little ten year olds do you know that can do even one pull up?

Something is just not adding

Something is just not adding up and I think that the mom know more than what shes telling. She has no freaking emotions at all to be a mom that has lost her child if it was a freaking accident. It seems that it was more going on in that home than meets the eye. How can anyone even hang theirself with nothing underneath them that is so hard to believe. Its hard to believe and I hope that it will come out because the poor mom actions speak louder than words. She has no freaking remoise. So whats her real story.

Exactly, all this was coming

Exactly, all this was coming in my mind.

10 year old

"She played with her belts and stuff like that,"WHO lets a child play with belts that hang from the ceiling???? This is unbelievable ! That poor child. Looking at Mom I think there is a lot more to thins story.

WHO HOOKS BELTS TO THE

WHO HOOKS BELTS TO THE CEILING? VERY UNBELIEVABLE.!! HOW DO YOU HAVE FROM THE CEILING BY A BELT HW CAN THE CHILD TIE IT TIGHT ENOUGH? SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT WITH THIS. MOTHER SHOWED NO EMOTION ON THE NEWS.

JASMINE

WHATEVER THE REASON, THIS IS A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY FOR THE FAMILY. MY SYMPATHIES TO ALL OF THEM.jieCi

How sad

How sad that this happened to such a young lady. My real concern is a statement made by the mom, "she would often hang from belts from the ceiling". Do you think this is normal? I don't and it raises suspicions in my mind.

Something else is going on here and it needs to be found out.

It just dont sound right and

It just dont sound right and not adding up. The mom didn't even have any emotions after loosing her child that's suspect enough and it all needs to be looked at because I ain't the law but do
someone may be covering up and if it was a accident someone be breaking down still but no emotions so it seems intended. I hope not because why hurt a child

Does anyone know If she was

Does anyone know If she was adopted . Was this her biological mom

I REALLYY agree, why wouldnt

I REALLYY agree, why wouldnt the mother have her to stop.???? Andd on WRAL.com , it says that she was bullied badly in school!
Prayingg Forr The Smith/McClain/West Family!

A Shared Tragedy...

Before retiring, I was assigned to investigate the suicide of a
13 y/o male who was found by his
sister, hanging from his treehouse in the woods. It's been 11 years ago for me, but I still see him & re-live the call. Sadly, his actions were intentional and tragic.

God give strength to all in Chadborn.

I remember it all too well

When I lived in NoVA and was still a rookie EMT dispatched to a house on Thanksgiving Day back in 1994. 10 yr old Boy had committed suicide very similar matter to itself. Sad story to make it worse. The child had been removed from his parents due to neglect and abuse and was living with his grandparents only to find out he'd been abused by the grandfather so the child felt they had no way out. Suicide among pre-teens are almost exclusively the result of abuse of the suicidal person normally, usually family related but not impossible that school abuse could have been a factor as well..
