WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Things were back to normal at UNC Wilmington today hours after police searched for an armed robbery suspect on campus prompting a lockdown.
It all started when a man reportedly robbed two women at gunpoint in the parking lot of the Hardee's on South College Road. They say he headed toward the woods on campus, which led campus police to an issue a campuswide alert.
Police say they got the report just before midnight. UNCW's police chief says within four minutes his department sent out phone, text, and e-mail alerts to students, telling them to stay inside.
Wilmington Police used a K-9 to follow a track from Hardee's, but it ended near a bus stop on Randall Drive.
Police lifted the alert at 5 a.m. when they believed the gunman was off campus.
"I actually had an evening class last night, so I was on campus during the incident. We took precautions and went inside, but I was never scared. I knew that they had it under control," UNCW student Katherine Freshwater said.
Wilmington Police say no one has been arrested for the robbery, but the investigation continues.
Police say they are looking for a light-skinned black man in his twenties with green eyes and a deep voice. They say he is about 5'11" with a stocky build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a red bandana partially covering his face.
