Cumberland County backs away from dog restrictions

READ MORE:

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) -- Cumberland County will not ban the adoption of so-called bully breeds of dogs.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the county animal control board decided against plans to ban the adoption of dogs such as pit bulls, Rottweillers, chow chows, American Staffordshire terriers and some other breeds.

About 100 people turned out for the board meeting earlier this week to condemn a plan the board had decided in October to recommend.

The board has told its animal control director to work on ways to more carefully screen people who adopt animals from the shelter.

Many in the crowd said it was impossible to classify an entire breed of dog as dangerous. Hope Mills groomer Karin Miller said it was wrong to categorize dogs just as it would be to categorize people.
