Ex-city council hopeful charged as NC gang leader

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) -- A North Carolina man who twice ran for Greensboro's City Council is among 13 people who federal prosecutors say were members of the Latin Kings gang indicted on racketeering charges.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported Wednesday that 12 of the 13 defendants were arrested.

Prosecutors said 35-year-old Jorge Peter Cornell of Greensboro led the North Carolina chapters of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation, which prosecutors say is a gang based in Chicago and New York. Prosecutors say the gang has been responsible for a host of North Carolina assaults, robberies, bank frauds, and murders since 2005.

Cornell held news conferences calling for peace among local gangs and for Greensboro's police gang unit to be dismantled. Prosecutors say he also bragged of killing rival gang members.
