WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- This holiday season, as we spend time with our loved ones, it's important to remember the loved ones who are fighting for our freedom and those who have died defending our great nation.
In honor of those brave men and women, hundreds gathered at Wilmington National Cemetery Saturday to place wreaths in memory of the fallen. Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit dedicated to remembering the greatest sacrifice during the holiday season.
"It is very heart-warming to see people honor the vets now because when I came back from Vietnam, they did not honor the vets like this at all,” said Claude McDonald, a Vietnam veteran who says he's touched to see so many paying their respects.
Special wreaths were hung to represent each branch of the military, prisoners of war and those who went missing in action.
The Wreaths Across America ceremony is a national effort that has been a part of our community for the past five years.
