LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- Neighbors rallied together last night to try to save a Leland home. Although the house at the end of Jennifer Court suffered significant fire damage, neighbors were able to help contain the fire and even saved a few puppies.

"It's just overwhelming to see something like that," neighbor Bessie Hollis said.

While the osborne family was away at church Wednesday night their home caught fire. Neighbors say they heard an explosion then immediately reacted.

"Our main concern was we knew they had puppies in there and a momma dog, so my son-in-law and my daughter and the neighbor from up the street went running over there to get the puppies out," neighbor Daulton Hollis said.

Although no people were in the house, neighbors got all seven Basset hound puppies, along with the mother, out safely.

Another neighbor says he jumped on the roof with a hose, trying to keep the flames at bay until firefighters arrived.

"Just in consideration to help someone, hoping that something could be salvaged," neighbor John Gavin said. "I hate to see someone lose there home at this time of year and just hoping that someone, if I was in that position, that they would step up to the plate and try and help me out as much as possible."

Although the home owners did not want to go on camera, they did seem very appreciative about how neighbors rallied in their absence.

"We were all trying to help," neighbor Patricia Darby. "Even the neighbors across the street ran in and tried to make sure nobody was in there, because they have grandbabies, and like I said, I grabbed a fire extinguisher, but that was pretty much useless."

The Brunswick County Fire Marshal does not yet know what caused the fire, but the investigation continues. All signs point to the fire starting in the back of the house, where it destroyed the Osbornes' deck. Much of the damage inside the home is from smoke and water.

For those who live off Jennifer Court, they are just thankful no one, man or beast, was hurt.

The Cornerstone Baptist Church of Leland is helping the Osborne family.
