WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Crews investigated an oil leak this morning along the Wilmington riverfront. The Coast Guard and Wilmington Fire Department were called out around 9 a.m. after someone walking along the Riverwalk spotted the oil in the Cape Fear River.

Crews looked for the source of the petroleum in front of Chandler's Wharf on Water Street and under the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

Firefighters say leaks are relatively common along the river.

"It does happen with the industry that is down here," WFD Capt. William Garner said. "The fuel tank farms, the dredging that is going on right now, the tug boats that run; just a lot of river traffic. We may get a call a couple times a year, but it's always minimum."

The fire department says it could not find the source of the oil leak.

leaking tractor trailer tankers

If you watch all those tanker trucks going up and down front street and crossing over the river you will notice them leaking every once in a while-and it's not rainwater coming off the top of the trailer.
Law enforcement need to pay closer attention to these vehicles.
