NC 172 reopened aboard Lejeune as smoke from wildfire clears

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (WWAY) -- Camp Lejeune has reopened a road closed overnight because of smoke from a wildfire.

For safety reasons, the provost marshal's office decided overnight to close NC 172 between the Triangle Outpost gate and Sneads Ferry Rd. due to limited visibility. The road was reopened this afternoon, but drivers are still advised to use caution as smoky conditions continue.

The Marine Corps base says crews contained the 1,200-acre fire yesterday, but it continues to burn creating dense smoke and decreased visibility.

The fire started yesterday morning in the "GC" maneuver area and began moving toward NC-172 near the Triangle Outpost gate entrance. Base Forestry officials say the controlled burns that have been routinely conducted on base significantly reduced the fire's fuel load. They say this fire was extremely beneficial from an ecological standpoint because it further eliminated the underbrush wildfires need for fuel.
