WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- A man is in custody after turning himself into police a day after a shooting in Whiteville left a man dead. Whiteville Police say Torres Newkirk surrendered earlier today.

According to the report, an officer responded to a call about shots fired at Brookberry Park Apartments around 6 p.m. Sunday. The report says witnesses told the officer that someone had been shot and taken to the hospital by car. They also said they saw a white Mazda 626 leaving the scene.

The victim, Joshua Andre Williams of Chadbourn, died a short time later at Columbus Regional Medical Center. Williams just turned 20 Tuesday.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections website, Newkirk, 23, has been convicted of two crimes in Columbus County: simple assault/affray in 2007 and carrying a concealed weapon in 2011. He was sentenced to probation for both misdemeanors.

??? raised by a strong BLACK woman ????

first of all i must say whoever wrote this commend "raised by a strong BLACK woman" seems to be a little behind.... what on earth does this have to do with anything? Obviously this guy was not raised right at all, otherwise he would have not went out and killed someone ... There is no difference if she was white, black, Mexican, Japanese or Polish, she did not raise him right!!! Look at Whiteville,Chadbourn and surrounding areas. There is absolutely nothing to do for young people, they grow up and their highlight of the day is going to Walmart, people around here have nothing better to do, than to walk around run their mouth about other people, spread rumors, spend their little bit of money at the ABC store, go to dogfights, or go from store to store to steal stuff.
Not everyone is like this i must say, there is hardworking people that try to take care of their kids, and show them something different. But from what i have seen, Whiteville needs to do something about getting them young people some excitements in their life, offer sports or something where they can get rid of all that energy, if you come home at night tired from work or other legal activities, the last thing on your mind will be "oh i need to go out rob and shoot someone", or "oh, i need to sit on my porch, drink a bottle of liquor and spread rumors about someone so they will get in trouble"
i have been living here for 4 years now, and what i see breaks my heart, no jobs, no money, no help for the poor, no wonder there is so much crime and violence around here. Whiteville needs a change a big one. I have never seen so much crime in a small city like this its unbelievable.

prayer is needed

Hello, I have been reading the comments that you all have left and I want to just say that Im related to Newkirk and do not know the child that was killed. But what I do know is this: I pray to God for comfront to the child that was killed family and for the Newkirk family. Nothing can be said or done to bring the young man back and as for Torres the matter will be handled regardless of what we think should or should not be done to him. Keep in mind that we need prayers for both families and for our youth.

He did turn himself in which

He did turn himself in which means he had a hand in it at least. His past does show he has been in trouble alot.

WWAY, if the police dont

WWAY, if the police dont know for sure if Newkirk is the shooter, why in the world do it matter about his past??

I would like for you show me

I would like for you show me where it says that the police didn't know he was the shooter. I will have you know that I know for fact that the police had already had the information on who the shooter was before Joshua died at the hospital. So lets not assume things and read things that aren't there. The police did an excellent job.

Obviously Newkirk is guilty

Obviously Newkirk is guilty or he wouldn't have turned himself him....

SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HIM

I have been knowing Newkirk all his life and he was brought up by a very strong BLACK WOMAN and a good hardworking mother that has work hard to do everything to raise her kids to do the right thing. Now we all know that it's hard out here with the different temptations that our kids can get into, (BLACK,WHITES,HISPANIC),or what ever race you may be .But i do know that if NEWKIRK has done this you better believe that this had to be (Escalating) for sometime and instead of people stepping up and talking to both parties they sat back and let it play out (Someone knew what was going on).Now someone is dead, that's what our young folks like watching. These things accur at Basketball,Football games even in school and different events.Everybody likes to see a good fight, but these kids don't fight with there hands anymore because they are scared that there repatation will be (Punked)some sit down with there parents i'm saying some of them and watch to much TV/MOVIES now look what we have here something that neither parents can fix.Who's to Blame in this situation everybody that was in the area everybody that knew about it that let this happen if you were there and did nothing remeber Mr.Williams and keep in your mind if or what could i have done to stop this. Mr Newkirk was in a position were he seen no way out of this at this point.I THINK IT WAS THE CASE OF EITHER KILL OR BE KILLED.Newkirk is not the type that would just shoot someone down in cold blood for no reason at all.If witness would just tell the (Truth YOU WOULD FIND OUT THESE TWO HAD A PROBLEM AND IT WAS TO THE POINT WERE IT WAS GOING TO BE EITHER OR AND NOBODY STEPPED IN.IS IT REALLY CALLED SELF DEFENSE),at the time these two cross each other path and it was (WHO WAS IN THE BETTER POSITION OR HAD THE UPPER HAND ThIS PARTICULAR DAY). It could of been the other way around would it had been alright for Mr.Newkirk to be (Dead)instead.(EVERYBODY JUST TELL THE TRUTH AND WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THESE TWO GUYS FOR IT TO GET TO THIS POINT.God knows that his mother would not want to have her son or to see anybody son killed or in this situation. My heart goes out to both families. There is always a sign but we don't do anything about it,Black on Black crime do you think anyone cares all WWAY want is news on any giving day.Lets keep it up and keep giving them what they want. Head line news.

For someone who knows him....

it seems you knew an awful lot about the transpiring events leading to Mr. Williams death. Did you go forward with information (speak-up) to let "someone" know??? As you stated and I agree, if people would alarm the law enforcement of such, they could be wise to the situation. Possibly prevent such events to occur.

If you knew of the possibility (as you stated "Mr Newkirk was in a position were he seen no way out of this at this point.I THINK IT WAS THE CASE OF EITHER KILL OR BE KILLED.Newkirk is not the type that would just shoot someone down in cold blood for no reason at all.If witness would just tell the (Truth YOU WOULD FIND OUT THESE TWO HAD A PROBLEM AND IT WAS TO THE POINT WERE IT WAS GOING TO BE EITHER OR AND NOBODY STEPPED IN.IS IT REALLY CALLED SELF DEFENSE),at the time these two cross each other path and it was (WHO WAS IN THE BETTER POSITION OR HAD THE UPPER HAND ThIS PARTICULAR DAY)."

DID YOU TELL THE TRUTH???

I've not "been knowing"...

this kid at all, but will say he should have thought twice before pulling the trigger. Your comments make a feeble attempt to justify his actions. Unless the other kid had a gun, Newkirk had options available to him...to pull or not pull the trigger. He did...the other kid died...and now Newkirk must face a jury of his peers.
