9 NC charter school bids approved for next step

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Nine proposed charter schools have gotten the approval of a North Carolina state panel reviewing whether they would be ready to operate this fall.

The North Carolina Public Charter School Advisory Council decided this week it will recommend nine applicants seeking fast-track approval to open in the next school year. The State Board of Education will discuss the applications next month and act on them in March.

The state Department of Public Instruction had received 27 fast-track applications.

More charter schools are expected after the Legislature removed last year a statewide limit of 100 such alternative public schools.
