SAMPSON COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- School was closed on Monday, but the gym was open at Union High School in Sampson County. The Fourth Annual MLK Basketball Jamfest is an all-day event with several local teams taking part.

Hoggard played Jack Britt in the first game of the event.

Tyler Thayer hit five three pointers and scored 21 points for the Vikings. Hoggard led by as many as 20 in the second half. Trevor Singleton added 15 points for the Vikes. They held on for a 68-62 win.

"You never know when you play on a non-school day in the afternoon like this, you don't know how things are going to be, but our guys were really focused and really good for three quarters," Hoggard coach Brett Queen said. "That's the first time we've ever beaten them. Of course, the other two times we played them were in sectional finals."

In game number two Pine Forest led New Hanover by 8 at the half. The Wildcats pulled even in the second half, but the Trojans played better half court offense than New Hanover at the end. Pine Forest beat New Hanover 67-61. It's the first loss of the season for the #2 ranked team in the state. Kadeem Allen led the Wildcats with 16 points. Allen got into foul trouble early in the game. New Hanover State Title Chances

I saw the game yesterday and Hanover has a deep bench but Angel clearly is not using it. You have a 5'7 point guard on Pine forest team who New Hanover matched up with 6'2 guards, New Hanover was getting beat every chance that little man got which led to foul trouble but New Hanover has a 5'7 quick guard on their own bench who didnt play at all. You cant play 5 starters the entire game because you will always have fatigue which will lead to reach ins and foul trouble. Then when those five starters get in foul trouble, you put kids in that dont hardly play. If you want a state championship Angel, use your bench ALL the time. Whats the point in having a deep bench if you arent utilizing it? If you keep playing those same five starters the entire game, you wont be earning that state title.

Hanover State Title chances

You are right basketballfan, Angel needed to use his bench more in that game. Some of the players on the bench are better players than some of the starters, that he played the entire game. I also stayed and watched Laney vs Westover game. Where was Laney's starting center??? Also Lynch, why did #1 Keeny Grady not start and he didn't get in the game until well into the 3rd quarter. Laney would have won that game if he was in it. He had at least 10 points and probably only played 10 minutes. He is normally known as a real well-mannered respectful young man. I couldn't imagine him doing something to deserve that. But as always Laney athletics and all there antics. Stop trying to hold kids back, because of your own selfish reasons.
